QSB60604 Professional Practice 1

This subject is lectured by Mr. Wong Chong Wei. He is a part time lecturer who has a lot of experience and passion. Of course, he likes to share his experience and knowledge to us during classes. This subject is basically about the procurement methods, tender document, PAM contract, Interim claim as so on. These all are the basic construction knowledge that we should know when we working in the field. The module is very challenging as I am not a student who likes to read but this subject need us to read more to gain extra knowledge. However, I will try my best to get more information and knowledge about this subject.


The subject consists of one mid term test, one group assignment, seminar and final exam.The group assignment requires us to do a report on explaining each type basic procurement method to the client and also comparing as well as finalize the most suitable procurement method. We also need to do a presentation on our findings. Seminar is an interesting part for this subject as well. This is because we all have to do a very deep research about our own topic and Mr Wong will always ask many challenging questions which can literally improve our critical thinking skills and presentation skills.

I like his tutorial class as everyone of us have the opportunity to involve in the class activity. Although the tutorial class every week is very challenging, Mr Wong manage to let us share our findings to everyone in the class which I think is a very interesting learning way. It is also a platform to improved our communication skills and public speaking skills. Besides, we also have improved our problem solving skills as we have to answer Mr.Wong's question all the time by using critical thinking.

CSC60603 Software Application for Quantity Surveying

I have learned a lot of new things in semester 4 including this subject. As the name mentioned as above, it is all about using software. We are lectured by Ms. Lim who is a young and patient lecturer. I like the way she teaches. I can learn how to use the software easily because Ms Lim tries very hard to explain to us in details.


We have learned 2 softwares which is CostX and Buildsoft. Firstly, we have to do a group assignment which is 20% of the module. The group assignment is to let us to understand what is BIM and the comparison of each BIM software. Then we have to present our findings to our lecturer and also compiling a report. Then, we have another individual assignment which is connected to measurement 4 as we have to use the particular element that we have done for measurement 4 assignment, type a BQ for it and build a price rate for the element by using Buildsoft. For my part, I have chosen internal floor finishes.

I have learned new software skills which is very helpful for my future career. It saves a lot of time by comparing to do manual measurement. I have also improved my communication skills as I worked with different people with different working styles. I have also improved my email skills because I have to get the price rate and also quotation from different suppliers so that I can build rate. Of course, I have improved my digital literacy skills as I can manage to use both software now.

BLD61203 Structure

First of all, this subject is mainly about physics. Even though I was a science stream student when I was in my high school, this subject is still challenging for me. We have learned about forces, moments, truss, beams and others. We learned the calculate the shear force and bending moments of the beams. It is not just about mathematics, it involves all the physics concept which is very difficult. However, we have a very patient lecturer - Mr Chai who is willing to explain to us whenever we do not understand the concepts or calculations.

This subject consist of one mid term test which is 25%, one in class assignment which is 25% as well as one final exam which is 50%.

I have improved my understanding skills during the tutorial as Mr Chai explain the calculation in details if I do not understand in the lecture class. I like his tutorial class because I can really practice the calculations in class so that I do not have to go home and do all the exercise and I have no one to ask if I do not understand. I have also improved my problem solving skills as this subject needs a lot of imagination and I have to apply all the theory when I am solving the calculation. I also understood the importance of the design of the structures to a building which might cause fatal and serious consequences.

QSB60504 Estimating

This is the first time I have ever learned about estimating. This subject is lectured by Ms. Azrina. At first I thought this subject is just simple mathematics. However, during the time I am doing the exercises, I found that it has its challenging part. In order to fully manipulate this subject, a strong construction knowledge base is a must. Like the way of laying bricks, mixing concrete and so on.

As usual, we have one group assignment which is very interesting. This group assignment is 40% and I teamed with another 9 course mates. The assignment basically is about we have to create our own contractor firm and all the groups will have to compete and bid for the tender of a project. We have to contact the suppliers to get the price rates for the materials and do calculation to get an ideal rate so that we can win the bidding. Besides, we have 10 % for ECA and 50% for final exam.

The subject overall is interesting as I enjoy calculations. We also have to prepare seminar for every week so that we can learn to interpret our knowledge learned from lecture class. Our seminar is basically being a tutor to teach other course mates how to do the particular topic of estimating.

I have improved my communication skills as I always have to deal with a very big group of people so that we can achieve the same goal. I have also improved my email skills as I have to get all the quotations from the supplier which is very challenging. I have also improved my problem solving skills because I always have to solve the calculation questions.

QSB60404 Measurement IV

We will have measurement 4 for semester 4. This module is lectured by Sr. Loo and also Sr Yeap who lecture us on Glodon. This subject basically like the previous semester, we learn measurement from work below lowest floor finishes until doors and windows and etc, we learn mostly about external work for this semester. For example, surface water drainage, sewerage, road and pavement, piling and water reticulation. For this semester I finally know that the Smm clauses in the taking off list is very important for being a QS student. I have learned to write the billing paper properly.

We will have one mid term test which is 20% and one group assignment which is 20%, Elemental cost analysis which is 10% as well as final exam which is 50%. The group assignment consist of 7 group members. It was very challenging because we need complete all the measurements for the bungalow project especially when our group have a relatively bigger size of bungalow than other groups.

I have improved my communication skills as I have a lot of interactions with my group mates to avoid miscommunication. Besides, I have improved my lifelong learning skills because I have learned many new things that I never knew before as what I have mentioned above. Sr Loo is a good lecturer as he helped us by answering many questions. I have also improved my digital literacy skills. Sr Yeap is very patient while teaching us to manipulate Glodon.

BLD 60503 Building Services II

This subject is taught by Mr. Tan Hee Chai who is a new part time lecturer. Basically, this subject will cover the topics of ventilation, fire protection, air conditioning and others.

The whole subject consists of one mid term test which is 20%, one group assignment which is 30% and one final exam which is 50%. For the group task, we are required to form a group and go to a site visit to study about the high rise building's fire protection system. Then we will need to write a report on the fire protection system follow by the requirement from Uniform Building By Laws (UBBL).

I have improved my lifelong learning skills as this subject has taught me a lot. I have gained much knowledge on this area. I know how does the whole fire protection system operate in a high rise building by having a case study on it. I have also get the opportunity to visit the pump room which is normally we will not have the chance to go in. Besides, I have also improved my communication skills because I have discussed about how to do the report with my fellow group mates in meetings. Every one of us will give our own opinions so that we can ensure that our report is fine. We also learn together when having site visit. We cooperate with each other to jot down all the points that the technicians has told us during the site visit so that we will not missed out any main points for the fire protection.

MGT60203 Management Science

Our lecturer for this subject is Mr. Wong Chong Wei. He has much experiences in the industry and also has attended many training which made he is very professional in giving lectures. For me, this subject is very new because I have never studied this kind of subjects. Basically, this subject will cover the concepts of management, organizational behavior and so on.

We will be required to do a group assignment which is 30%. In the group task, we will need to write a report on how to start a business with a 10 million capital, conduct training and development for our employees and more. Besides, we also need to do a presentation on our report. Next, we have a mid term test as well which is 20% and final exam which is 50%.

In this subject, I have learned a lot from Mr. Wong. In every week's tutorial, Mr. Wong will ask us to do presentation in front of the class. He also group us with different people so that we can learn something from working with different people. I feel this is really precious because this can let me step out from my comfort zone. The tutorials can improve my public speaking skills and also critical thinking because Mr. Wong always will ask questions so I always have to solve his question in front of class. Besides, I have also learned more about how to manage a group effectively. I have also understood that there are various types of working and leadership styles so that I can easily adapt to the fast changing market and working environment in the future. I found this is no doubt that very useful for everyone of us.  

MGT60303 Facility Management

This is an elective subject for semester 3. Among all the elective subject options, I have chosen this subject because I want to know more about property's facility. Our lecturer is Sr. Andrew Cheong who has many experience in VS industry. Basically, this subject has covered about JMB, maintenance fees, swimming pool, sewage and more. It is also a brand new experience for me because that the lecture and tutorial is conducted at night time.

The whole subject has no final exam but we are required to do a group report which is 50% and another group case study about swimming pool which is 20% and 30% for mid term test.

I have gained so much knowledge on facility management. Sr. Andrew has also introduced us about VS which is an occupation that I did not know. This has been improved my Lifelong learning skills. Besides, I have also improved my communication skills because in the group assignment, we have to perform good teamwork to do research on the sites and have to go to site visit together. Teamwork is very important for the group assignment. Although searching for sites and the site visits are quite complicated because most of the private premises do not allow us to take photo but it was really a good experience for me. Moreover, I have also know more about the swimming pool system by looking at the real swimming pool operating system components. Sometimes is hard for us to understand with just brief explanation and some photos, we have to go to see the real things so that we can understand easily.

BLD 60304 Construction Techonology III

This is for the subject called construction technology 3 which is lectured by Mr. Chiew who was our CT 2 lecturer. This subject consists of one individual assignment, group task , mid term test and one final exam. For the group assignment, I have formed group with Chong Kai Xiang, Chin Weng Lok, Hiew Li Ming and Lee Ern Hui. We are required to make a 20 minutes video and the topic of the video that we have chosen is IBS. We would like to study more about it so we choose this topic.

For reflection, this subject has again improved my construction knowledge as it was all about the process in the construction industry such as dewatering, IBS, aluminum form work and more. I can tell that these all surely would help a lot for our future career. I appreciate all the precious knowledge that Mr. Chiew shared with us which is so helpful. All the videos and lecture slides are easy to understand. Besides, during the group work, I have improved my digital literacy skills as I have learned how to improve my manipulating skills on video editing software. This is so good that I can discover other soft skills instead gain knowledge by studying slides all the time.

QSB 60304 Measurement III

This is my semester 3 and I have Measurement 3 which is lectured by Mr. Soon Lam Tatt. Firstly, I would like to say thank you so much for our lecturer who is so patient and understanding. I enjoyed his lectures and tutorials so much because his class is interesting.

Basically this subject will cover about the openings such as door and windows, roof and landscaping in this semester. We will have one mid term test which is 25%, one group assignment which is 25% and a final exam which is 50%.

After one semester, I have learned a lot from this subject. I have gained more knowledge on installing a door and a window as we have learned about the taking off for different types of opening. This is so helpful for us for our future career. For the group assignment, we have improved our digital literacy skills as we have given the priceless opportunity to learn how to use the latest software which is Glodon to build a house model and also taking off the whole building. I feel the software is interesting due to it is really new and useful although it is hard to control at first but I will try my best to manipulate it. Besides, communication skills has been improved as well due to working with my fellow group mates. I like this subject so much and I really appreciate all the effort paid by Mr. Soon.
