BLD60204 Construction Technology 2

After construction technology 1 in semester1 , here comes construction technology 2 in my second semester. Lecturer for this module, Mr. Chiew has many experiences and professional knowledge on construction this industry. Basically this module will be mainly focus on the technology used when constructing and elements of building structure such as piling, steel portal frame and etc.We would be able to develop more knowledge on the construction procedure so that we know how does a construction process goes in our future career.

The module consists of one mid term test, one individual assignment which is technical drawing to let us understand more details of some building components. Second assignment is a group assignment which is a 20 minutes video on a construction process. I have teamed up with Hiew Liming, Lee Ern Hui, Chong Kai Xiang and Hor Weng Lim. The topic that we are presenting is scaffolding.

Last but not least, I have learned so much from this module as I gained knowledge on the construction procedure so that I know what will be going on in construction site. I have improved my interpersonal skills because I worked hard together with my fellow members to create a 20 minutes video which is a new challenge for me. I have never tried to edit such a long video in my life time. Thanks for my members which help each other on video editing, narrating, researching and so on. The group project has improved my digital literacy skills as well because this is the first time I am using a video editing software, Sony Vegas Pro. These all are new things for me but I have tried my best to learn and use it in assignments. Besides, lecturer has worked very hard for lecture and tutorial class. He shared a lot of information and experiences with us so that we can know more about this industry which is very important for everyone of us. Appreciate all these that I have gained from semester 2.

QSB60103 Site Surveying

I was told by seniors that site surveying this subject is all about mathematics. However, after all, it was not that easy. It is more to Physics for me, to be honest, but it ain't physics or mathematics, it is Site surveying. This module mostly cover on how we use a specific professional machine like theodolite to measure the angles and etc. We learned to understand leveling, traverse, EDM and etc.

For this subject, we will be having one test which is mid term test and two lab reports. Report 1 will be cover the topic of leveling while report 2 will be covering the topic of theodolite. Both reports are based on the data that we have obtained from the field work that we have done.

In a nutshell, this subject is interesting because we get to experience field work. We get the opportunity to try out the machines such as theodolite to do our field work. Unlike other subjects, this subject let us get involved in the field work so that we can experience the future site work. Although the field work is tiring and might having the chance to go through the process of sun burn, the experience that we have gained is precious. Lecturer has shared a lot of experiences on the construction site as well which is what I appreciated. Communicating with group members so that we can cooperate to complete the field work as fast and accurate as possible. This process might improve my communication skills for my future life so that I can communicate well with my future colleagues. Besides, our group members has work together to complete the reports as well.

BLD60403 Building Services I

I still remember this is the first subject we had when semester 2 started. It sounded interesting after semester one's building material, this subject is another subject to let us understand things around us. This module will mainly cover the topic of ventilation, sewage, water treatment and etc. These all are actually just around our living environment.

We will be having one group assignment which is doing a report and presentation on a selected topic in group. Our group basically has chosen the topic of ' ventilation problems in heritage buildings'. Our group member included Liming, Michelle, Jack, Jian Ru and Chuning.

In conclusion, I have learned so much from this subject thru assignments and lectures. Lectures are interesting as we have a responsible lecturer, Ms. Zhermaica. I learned that the building services and systems all around us so that I will be more understanding on the building structure and construction process which is really helpful for my future career. In group assignments, I have learned to interact with group members so that I have improved my communication skills. J learned more on the topic of ventilation as well as I have done deep research on it. I wouldn't do extra research if I did not need to complete this assignment. Therefore, I appreciate that the assignment has pushed me to work hard for gaining my knowledge. Besides, I learned to improve my public speaking skills as well because I need to practice hard to present in front of course mates which is one of the big challenge for me. I'm feeling thankful for everything because everything I get and I learned from this module is really useful and helpful.

QSB60204 Measurement II

Right after semester 1, we will be having measurement II as our core subject as well. Our lecturer is Ms. Habizah. For this semester, we will be learning on the topic of work above ground such as wall, ceiling, floor finishes, staircase and so on.  We will be able to develop more knowledge on measurement principles, descriptions and etc.

For this module, we will be having one mid term test which is 25% of the total mark. One group assignment which is 25% while final exam will be occupied 50%.

For reflection, the overall of the module is good. I did learned a lot of new things and being able to develop more knowledge on measurement. Although the descriptions of the taking off is more complicated and longer than semester 1 for sure, but I did try my best to memorize all the descriptions and try to understand. The learning outcome was awesome because we can know more on the construction procedure. Besides, in the group assignment, I have developed the communication skills to interact more with the group mates so that we can arrange work equally and work hard together to achieve the same goal which is to complete the assignment. Then, I did improve the skills of reading a proper plan and drawings so that is is useful for my future career life.
I appreciate that what I have gotten from this module in this semester and I wish that I will become a better QS student with professional knowledge who graduate from Taylor's University.

QSB 1514 Construction technology

First of all, this module aims to provide understanding of a wide range of building components with different functions. It also describes the design process, how to build the elements and some simple sketches. This subject basically teaches us about the technologies used on construction. Firstly we learnt about temporary work including choosing a site, scaffolding and etc. Then, we learnt in details for topic such as doors, windows, staircase, foundation and so on. Each of them fully explained how to construct and also the structure. The topic i liked the most is foundation because it is really interesting and fun chapter.

Our lecturer for this subject is Ms. Azrina.

The module consist of 25% for mid term test, 10% for individual report, 15% for group report and 50% for final exam.

For this project, we have visited a real construction site and we did learnt a lot from it because we had an awesome experience for site visit. The site visit is very beneficial for everyone of us who participating.

In addition, the group project required us to visit a shopping mall and observe as well as study about the roof, windows, doors and staircase. The site that we have chosen is Sunway Pyramid as it is convenient for everyone due to the site is near to campus. By the way, my group member are as same as building material's group. Then, after the site visit, we have to work together to type a report for our studies.

In conclusion, this module has taught us much about construction technology. We started from zero as we don't even know what is excavator, crane and so on at the first day of the class when Ms Azrina asked all of us, then until now we all know about what are them while we have visited the construction site and have seen what are them and how do they work. Besides, I also get to recognize the type of foundation after I have learnt from this subject. I would like to appreciate the hard work of Ms Azrina to prepare slides which is informative. I really learnt a lot from this subject and I do feel I love this industry more as this module has brought me near to my dream which is a quantity surveyor. Not only about learning, it is also about self discipline. This is because time management is important for completing the assignments while studying for exam. I have to arrange my time wisely to complete the stuffs. In addition, teamwork is also built after we completing the group assignment as we need to compromise as everyone has different thoughts. To achieve a same goal, we need to work hard together. Thanks for this module for being so beneficial for me also for everyone of us.

BLD62003 Building material

Basically, this subject is related to building materials. The main purpose of this subject is to develop our understanding toward the chemical and physical properties and structure of each kind of building material. For example, concrete, timber, glass, rubber and etc. It was quite interesting subject for me because I can know more about construction industry. Not only for construction, I can know more about everything around me like daily product. It is like chemistry classes during highschool when there are terms like ethene, crystalisation and etc. Besides, we also know more about the manufacture process and also understand the reason behind the material used in a building. Before I came in this course, I did not know that there is so much knowledge about a simple concrete column. I did not know that blast furnace process is invented for iron. These all are considered as a basic for a quantity surveyor I assume.

Lecturer for this subject is Ms. Aishah who has interesting lecture to catch our attention.

The module consists of 20% for mid term test, 20% for group assignment, 10% for individual report while 50% for final exam.

For the group assignment, we are assigned to observe and study the building materials used in a selected site. I grouped with Albert, Hor Weng Lim, Seng He and also Sherlyn. Our chosen site is computer lab. Then, after the site visit including photo taking section, we are required to make presentation boards to present on what have we studied for the particular building material. The material that we have found out are glass, aluminum, concrete, asbestos and so on. After we have done the boards then we have to present for it.

Basically our design concept is minimalistic. Simplicity is beautiful. We also did a lot of pop out infographic to make the boards look interesting. The boards consist of advantages and disadvantages of the material and also the recommendation.

In a nutshell, this is an interesting subject as we really learnt a lot. Lecturer has prepared very well for the slides which has much information for further understanding toward this module. We are also required to present in front of course mate on our researches for particular topic to improve our self knowledge for the topic as well as improve our presentation skills. Then, I really learnt a lot from this subject and I will never forget what I have learnt as I did a lot researches on this subject. I have develop more knowledge about building materials and also their properties. The site visits also taught me much about the building materials as I can see and touch it. Not just the site visit to Andes construction site, the visit to Lafarge is also beneficial. Group project helped me to make a lot of new friends and work with them together as well. Being thankful for this subject and effort paid by the Ms Aishah.

QSB60104 Measurement I

This is the core subject of this semester. I can also say this is a very important subject for our future job. Before I came in for this course, I thought that having good calculating skills is enough for being a quantity surveyor. However, this subject have given me another perspective toward quantity surveyor. It isn't about mathematics, it is about understanding the construction and only you can measure about it then calculate the quantity as well as the cost. Basically if you don't understand the concept, you can hardly handle the measurement.

We have mid term test which is 20% while assignment ( individual report 10%
+ group assignment 20%) which is 30%. Final exam is 50% of the module.

Sr. Ang Fuey Lin is our lecturer who also our program director. She is full of experience and a good teacher as well. She teaches us patiently and explain everything in details when we couldn't understand.

For measurement I, we will learn things about work below lowest floor level which include excavation and earthwork, reinforcement bar and mesh fabric reinforcement, concrete and formwork of beam, slab and column and so on. We also learnt how to write taking off list, dimension paper, query list and etc. Reading a technical drawing is required as well. For referencing, we have also purchased SMM2 as our guidance for learning the rules of measurement which is Sr Ang strongly recommended. I think the book is useful for everyone of us. Then, those tutorial exercises are very helpful for developing a stronger understanding toward measrement I.

The project brief for group assignment.

The report is all in hand written so I don't have any file to show. The final report is so thick as well that I have never tried to finish a report in such thickness before. We have prepared and worked really hard for this project. No matter how much is the grading, we have paid our effort. From distributing the work to helping each other out, I learnt a lot from every part of this assignment. Learning how to handle the measurements for one floor, trying to read technical drawings, asking solutions and solving problems with group mates and lecturer, I felt like I have gotten so much from this assignment while lectures sometimes did not cover the part such as stiffener. Besides, I learnt to compromise, tolerate and become more considerate. Working with people is always a difficult job but this is what we need to overcome to become a better person.

In conclusion, this subject is the subject that I liked the most. It is challenging yet interesting. We start everything from zero like what we learnt from underground foundation. It isn't easy as it is not just about simple calculation as what I have mentioned above. It is not about memorizing any text from the book but it is all about hard work on practicing and understanding. This subject makes me learnt a lot and I really appreciate it. While we are trained to be more self discipline so that we can finish tutorials every week to improve. For this entire semester, I did improved my interpersonal skills as well because we are assigned to work together while we are going to work with others in future too. These knowledge on measurement has also bring me nearer to a future quantity surveyor too.

LAW63704PT144-M Introduction to Law

This is the subject that I have never thought that I will study in my entire life. I was quite worried about Intro to law this subject as I have no interests in studying law to be honest. However, this course as well as this subject has changed my mind.

This subject doesn't have any assignment but we will be having 2 tests which is 25 marks each and one final which is 50 marks.

Before mid term of our semester, we have to learn about Malaysia Legal system as a warm up and also introduction for this subject. From this topic, I know more about how a law run in Malaysia, for example, how laws are made, Malaysia court system, sources of law and etc. After that, we have learnt about Contract Law as well. We learned about acceptance, offer, consideration, intention to create legal relations and more. Then, after mid semester break, we learnt about Tort too. Tort have taught us about negligence, nuisance, strict liability and more.

This subject has taught me a lot about knowledge for law which is I never knew before came into this course. I know how to protect myself by applying law. I understand more about contract law which is very important for our future job - Quantity Surveyor. Being a professional QS, we have to have a great knowledge of law to make us become more outstanding and useful for future company.

Thank you our lecturer,Ms. Shoba who willing to guide and teach us patiently from zero to more and more. I didn't expect I could have learnt so much. Much appreciation for the tutorial exercises as well. It helps a lot! Never look down on a tutorial exercise because you might miss a lot of main points from that particular exercises. I like the tutorial exercises which make me more good on applying what have I learnt to real life. Thinking and problem solving skills got improved and I felt like I turned more self discipline to control myself practice more and study more to get more knowledge.
